Halloween
is on October 31st and,
although it originated with the Celts in Europe, it has become popular in the US and South America too. People go to Halloween
parties wearing scary masks and costumes. The word 'Halloween' comes from All
Hallows Evening or Allhalloween.
Halloween,
for the Celts, marked the end of the harvesting season and the beginning
of winter.
They also believed it was a supernatural bridge between the worlds of the
living and the dead and that on the night of Halloween ghosts, witches and evil spirits
crossed over. The Celts wore scary costumes and lit fires to keep the evil away. Nowadays it
is a time of fun and celebration.
Typical
Halloween activities include playing pranks (Trick or treats), going to costume parties, carving
pumpkins, lighting bonfires and telling ghost stories.
